We make spaces for art and living.

Founded in 2017 by Daniel Roush, Field Guide provides creative design solutions that achieve the owner’s functional goals while creating beauty and respecting the project context.

Born and raised in Michigan, Daniel was interested in architecture from an early age.  After studying liberal arts at Ohio’s Kenyon College, he attended The University of Texas at Austin for his architecture degree.  From there, he returned to his native Midwest where worked on a variety of significant architectural projects, often involving historical buildings and the display of artwork.  Outside the office, he enjoys tennis, golf, and outdoor adventures with his wife and two kids.  Daniel lives in Oak Park, Illinois, where he previously chaired the Historic Preservation Commission.  In 2023-24, Daniel co-chaired the Village’s Facility Review Committee, examining re-use options for Oak Park’s historic Village Hall, a National Register-listed design by Harry Weese currently threatened with demolition.

What’s with the name?

It’s about process. Each project requires a collaborative approach and every team member brings essential insights. The architect provides creative leadership and moves the project forward. A field guide, if you will.

It’s also an homage to a favorite design resource, Virginia Savage McAlester’s classic book A Field Guide to American Houses. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out.
